I attended this school at the same time as Charles Holmes (5/12/01) and was in his class so had the same teachers as he did. I was sad to read the school pond had been filled in, I too can remember jumping across it, although I never did fall in I can remember plenty did! The head master at the time was Mr Ware. My favourite teachers were Mr Phillips and Mr Wedlock. I was so excited when I was one of four children Mr Wedlock picked to go the TV studios and be in the audience for one of the shows he was appearing in. He even treated us to dinner at the cafeteria – sausage, egg and chips – what a class act I was never driven to school but can remember walking to and from it in all seasons! I can remember dropping in at the sweet shop to buy liquorices strips, sour apple tarts, lemon sherbets and many more sweets before taking them to the Lightening Tree to consume them with my friends. Walking in the snow wearing ‘groovy’ white lace up boots with Fiona French, kicking autumn leaves near Mrs Gatsby’s Riding stables and languidly leaning on the bough of a tree over the fish pond in an attempt to catch a fish. If I was late home no one worried about it, but thought I must have been playing or at a friends– as long as I was home in time for tea! I have been living in Australia for over 30 years now and often think back to those days with great fondness. I was thrilled when I discovered your web site and find the changes made to the school very interesting.

Hello to everyone at Elm Park from sunny Texas!

We had a wonderful time at Elm Park school and made lots of friends and we'll never forget the great teachers who taught us.
From Heather (I'm 5 now) - I had a lovely time at school with my friends and I enjoyed when I was doing my work on the carpet! I also hope you have a lovely time on your holidays.
I've got a wobbly tooth and I'm quite worried it's going to fall out soon :)

Mrs Hughes - you're the best Headteacher in the world (so caring)!!!

To Miss Grisedale (from Hannah Rose) - good luck with your forthcoming wedding - we will always be kindred spirits.

We'll have our own email at home soon and we'll send you the email address over the summer holidays (if not before).

Have a great summer holiday Elm Park School!!! :) :)

Hiya Elm Park,
I am really enjoying The Ridings High and it is very enjoyable. I kind of miss ElmPark though. I have been to Robyn's house and she said that she has made lots of new friends but misses Elm Park just the same. I hope to maybe come over one day to see the teachers. I hope the pond is getting on well and I hope everyone had a nice time at the Haloween disco last night. Love Anna x

Hey all at Elm Park, thank you very much for the week I had with you for my work experience, I had a great time; some of my best bits were eating the yummy school dinners, playing football on the field at lunch, playing games on the field with pine class, doing the woodlice experiment with willow class and learning the leavers song! Thanks again. Good luck with your new school year! Hope to see you all soon Blase!xxx

Wow I've only just found this site! I was at Elm Park from 1981- 1988 and I loved every minute. The head back then was the lovely Mr Kendall and my favourate teacher of all time was Mr Moore he was the coolest teacher and everyone loved him! Also Mrs Humphreys , Mrs Reed, Mrs Chamberlain who i was really fond of as well even though everyone was scared of her, I remember when we did school plays and we were dressed up in very big net curtains as we were snowflakes and i once played a leaf(my staring role)So many more memories and I am very thankful for them and everytime i go to see my mum I always drive by with happy memories, so to everyone i know a big hello!!! xxx

My memories of Elm Park go back 30 years, I too remember the exciting Narnia stories being read to us by Miss Shaw back in 1975, she had so much enthusiasm, I laugh out loud when I think of Mrs Humphries bravely teaching us maypole dancing in 1977 for the queen's Silver Jubilee (what patience !), Mr Phillips teaching us amazing tricks to remember multiplication-tables easily, Mrs Reed must have taught generations to play the recorder. When I look back at those years, I realise how much dedication these wonderful people must have shown. Oh yes, one last point, the butterscotch puddings our dinnerladies put together were heavenly !!! I live in France and smile fondly when my daughter tells me about her fun time in school with her friends as I know this is the foundation of a happy adult life. Enjoy !!

IN REPLY TO BRYONY BELOW
Hi Bryony,

Remember me ? Kath Hyne (now Fare). Guess what my own children are now at Elm Park, year five, year three and year one. Or in our school days known as year three and one (juniors) and year one (Greenfield?s Infants). It all gets very confusing!!!!!

Have you been back to Elm Park recently? Just a few environmental changes to note ? no longer a fishpond outside the dining room ? so that put an end to seeing who could jump and clear the pond and who ended up with wet shoes and socks! If I recall much to Mr Ware?s, (The Head) endless exasperation!!! The monkey tree still stands at the front of the school. Planted with love and care by our year group and Mr Ware himself. I can still hear him saying ?every time you pass Elm Park that tree will remind you of your time here?. How right he was ? however, the tree is hardly any bigger than the day it was planted! As a child it never crossed my mind that Mr Ware may also have a Christian name ? (teachers didn?t). I met Mrs Ware recently, we remembered the field trips, Mrs Ware, having the endless task of sorting out my hair - two long plaits tied with pink ribbons! ? much to the embarrassment of my children when the photo was put on the wall at Elm Park?s 40th birthday. Thanks to Mrs Doane, their dinner lady who took great delight in pointing me out to them. Still Sharon, can?t resist an opportunity - remember when the fire brigade was called, you know that famous incident when you got your head stuck in the playground railings ? say no more !!!!!!!

You didn?t mention Mr Wedlock (yes him of ?Oldest Swinger in Town? fame) and Miss Boddy sitting in the French room (that small room off the dining room which has since been used as a classroom, a library and now a ?fish? room!) she was forever singing ?These boots are made for walking? quite appropriate as we all thought ?WOW look at Miss Boddy in her mini skirts and knee length boots!? Now her books are used with the interactive white boards ? yes, not as good as hearing her read them!!!!

Mrs Parkinson?s infamous violin lessons, in the girls PE changing room (now used as the SENCO room), I must get mine out of the loft! Nearly setting light to the person in front as we walked in possessions with lighted candles as part of the Christmas concert (guess we were not quite so health and safety conscious) the teacher who came over from St. Helena and built a hot air balloon with us ? it caught fire before it left the ground!! Forever having country dancing lessons and playing ?pirates? in the gym. Stopping at Sullivan?s on the way to school when you could buy 8 chews for a penny (and a few freebies) and playing on the lightening tree after school. Not forgetting conker collecting in the Mead?s mansion grounds ? and also getting caught!!!! Spending the whole day sat in the hall, watching Black and White TV, and waiting for the men to land on the moon!!!!!

Summer year 4 (now year 6) with Miss Williams - down in the terrapin at the bottom of the school field - did we do anything else apart form play rounders ? no SATS in those days. It was great ? I met Miss Williams a few months back she had vivid memories of our year and she couldn?t believe how Carol Ray had treasured to this day the memento she gave us as we left Elm Park School.

I feel I have almost gone full circle as I drop my children off at Elm Park every day ? the school is vibrant, happy, with a caring ethos. When asked why I actively involve myself with Elm Park today, I believe the real reason is because Elm Park provided me with a happy start, good long term friends and loads of fond, happy memories. I hope in years to come my own children will feel the same as I do about my early school years ? so far I feel this will be so!!!!!

I attended Elm Park between 1969 and 1973. The teachers I remember were: Mr Ware (the Head), Mr Knight, Mr Phillips, Miss Boddy, Mr Turner, Mrs Telford and Miss Williams, not forgetting Mrs Parkinson who travelled in once a week to teach us the violin.

I remember Miss Boddy reading us practically the entire Narnia series; Mr Turner letting us write and produce a puppet play all by ourselves; the Christmas candlelit production of ?Santa Lucia?, which we sang entirely in Danish, and Miss Williams? production of ?The Chocabox?. The school uniform was grey skirt/trousers, white shirt, dark green tie with yellow stripes and a grey blazer, though it wasn?t compulsory. We played ?clackers?, hopskotch and French skipping in the playground, rounders in the school field, and were taken swimming to the Dolphin Pool, Filton. During the winter we had to walk to school in the dark, courtesy of Double British Summer Time, and had flourescent strips sewn to our coats and satchels. Very few of us were ever driven to school, which was fine by us as it meant we could buy liquorice bootlaces and ?traffic light? lollies on the way in. The big crazes were gonks (we made them homes in old Easter egg boxes, furnished with felt carpets and scraps of wallpaper), the new ?Britt? doll, button collections and crocheted ponchos - good to see some things haven?t changed! So what about that alumni organisation?

Hello!! I went to Elm Park between Sept 1990 and July 1995, the teachers at that time were Mrs Lawler, Mrs Spyers, Mrs Jones, Mr Wood, Mr Hazeldine, Mrs Johns, Mrs McWhinnie and Miss Stent with Miss Dursley as head teacher. I've got so many good memories of being at this school!! Good luck with everything and hopefully we'll have a reunion some day?!!!

I attended Elm Park school between 1962 and 1968 and have some pretty vivid memories (overwhelmingly positive!) of the school and teachers (Mr. Ware, Phillips, Dowling, Knight, Wedlock, Mrs Hares etc.) and fellow pupils. It certainly was an excellent school right from day one and on the basis of your excellent website (which I was thrilled to come across) and outstanding exam results seems to have gone from strength to strength during the forty years.
I manage to return to England quite frequently to visit my parents who still live in Winterbourne and I always make a point of driving past the school. Now I can surf by the old front gates on my computer!! Best wishes to everyone at the school. Did you ever think of setting up an alumni association ?
